We are in the midst of an unprecedented crisis, and families may be separated from loved ones even at the time of death. Added to this there is the unrelenting pressure on health and social care staff, particularly in our hospitals. As network members we extend our deepest concern and heartfelt wishes for all those suffering from the effects of the coronavirus and for all the anxiety and stress this has caused to us all.
Most NHS organisations have suspended volunteering and this has affected many of our Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious (PSR) volunteers. Some paid PSR staff are also having only limited access to patients at end of life.
However, we are committed to supporting patients and families in innovative ways, to maintain PSR support. For example, organisations have developed disposable prayer and meditation sheets as well as providing support to staff and patients over the phone or via IT solutions.
We stand alongside all our colleagues to provide the best possible care at this time. Our common humanity will bring us through.
